Novak Djokovic's Road To French Open 2024 Final

Will Djokovic win his 25th grand slam?

In a gruelling five-set match against Italy's Lorenzo Musetti that stretched into the early hours of Sunday morning, Novak Djokovic emerged victorious with a scoreline reading 7-5, 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. The clash, lasting until 3.07 am set a new record for the latest finish in Roland-Garros history. Djokovic's epic win marked his 369th triumph at a Grand Slam event, tying him with Roger Federer for the most major match wins of all time. Should he triumph over Francisco Cerundolo in the upcoming round, Djokovic will stand alone at the forefront of this esteemed record. However, victory was far from assured as Djokovic faced a daunting deficit, falling behind two sets to one against the tenacious Musetti.

After the match, Djokovic dodged the question of weird scheduling, stating “I don’t want to get into it. I have my opinions but I think there are great things to talk about in this match today. Both Lorenzo and my performances stand out so I don’t want to be talking about the schedule. I think some things could have been handled a different way but there’s also a beauty in winning a match (so late).”

Djokovic is vying to clinch his 25th major title, we look at his potential opponents on his way to the final.

Novak Djokovic vs Francisco Cerundolo in Fourth Round

Djokovic won the game against Musetti, but at what cost? The gruelling match must have taken a toll on him, and the effect is likely to be visible in his fourth-round clash against Franciso Cerundolo. The match will be played at Phillipe-Chatrier in the evening.

Djokovic's Opponent For Next Rounds

If Djokovic gets through the fourth round, he is likely to come against the Norwegian Casper Ruud, who has had an impeccable record on clay. However, when it comes to head-to-head, Ruud's only victory over the Serb came last year at the Monte Carlo Masters.

For the semis, Djokovic's potential opponents include Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Holger Rune, and Alex de Minaur. Amongst them, Zverev would pose the most stiff challenge, provided he qualifies. The German swashbuckler has a very direct style of play and has been playing very fluent games this season. The battle between Djokovic and Medvedev is also going to be an interesting one.

In the final, Djokovic will likely be facing either Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, two dashing players poised to take the mantle.
