$13 million. That is the amount this unique Rolls-Royce Sweptail got sold for. The price tag made this the most expensive car in the world till 2019, but once the $18 million Bugatti La Voiture Noire was announced, the Sweptail got pushed to the second position.
This one-of-a-kind car was unveiled last year as a custom commission for a well-heeled Rolls-Royce client, and was easily the most striking car the British marque has ever produced.
The hand-built luxury car draws inspiration from the manufacturer’s vintage models from the 1920s and 1930s, as well as luxury yachts. Our favourite feature might just be the centre console that houses a bottle of champagne – bottled in the owner’s birth year, along with two crystal flutes. Unique, fancy, but sort of weird.
Giles Taylor, director of design at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars described the Sweptail as “the automotive equivalent of Haute couture.”
The British luxury-car and aero-engine manufacturing company said the undisclosed client — a connoisseur of super-yachts and aircraft — came to them sometime in 2013 to realise his vision of a unique luxury car, a two-seater coupé featuring a large panoramic glass roof.
The Sweptail is an extension of 103EX Concept, which Rolls Royce showed under its Vision Next 100, to make personalised futuristic cars for its patrons.

“Rolls-Royce’s history as the world’s leading coachbuilder is at the very core of its identity as the world’s leading luxury brand. The arrival of 103EX shone a light on the future of Rolls-Royce in this field, and Sweptail is proof, today, that Rolls-Royce is at the pinnacle of coachbuilding,” Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said in a statement, Hindustan Times reported.
The Sweptail is also the most special Rolls-Royce ever made, as it gets the largest ever aluminium grille in a Rolls Royce, hand-polished to the mirror finish. The signature ornament ‘Spirit of Ecstasy’ is also the largest ever. Under the hood, the Sweptail gets a giant 6.6-litre V12 engine, and despite being a two-seater coupe, spans to over 6 metres.
The elements ingrained within the interiors are made from Macassar Ebony and Paldao veneers, while the leather used on the seats are Moccasin and Dark Spice.
“You might say we cut the cloth for the suit of clothes that he will be judged by. Sweptail is the automotive equivalent of haute couture,” Giles Taylor, the director of design at Rolls-Royce, said.
It’s safe to say, the Sweptail was made for one very rich, classy gentleman.
