Mercedes-Benz has updated its already futuristic MBUX infotainment system with ground-breaking AI capabilities, at the ongoing Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The massive hyperscreen display which extends throughout the entire dashboard of the cabin is now capable of delivering more smarter and emphatic responses, and even sarcasm through the system’s voice assistant.
To amp up the drama a notch higher, the cabin interior lights now illuminate in different colours. If that’s not enough, as per Mercedes, the seats are now also capable of providing haptic feedback, to get the visual assistance message across. But apart from the frills, the updated MBUX is now capable of learning the driver’s daily routine and can access the user’s calendar. For instance, if you’re running late, the virtual assistant will suggest attending the meeting virtually on the road.
But that’s not it. The company has also added a slew of in-car gaming features, which will allow access to classic titles from Nintendo, Sega and even Atari. Sony Pictures Entertainment will provide the accompanying film and television content via an app called Ridevu.
In addition to all of this, Mercedes-Benz has also announced a new audio content streaming partnership with Amazon Music and Audible for something called “audio movies,” which are essentially a collection of mini-series. Hollywood A-listers like Gillian Anderson, Michael Sheen, and James McAvoy have been roped in to star in the project.
But the crème de la crème update comes from a new functionality called the ‘Sound Drive,’ which as per Mercedes, allows the driver to play their car like a musical instrument. Made in collaboration with will.i.am, this technology uses the inputs given to the throttle, brakes, and steering to sort of influence the song that is currently playing.
The music producer recently showcased a brief video of how this works and commented on the tech by saying, “I can’t think of another dimension of creativity. Yes, the sample was important in the 1980s and 1990s. Yes, the computer was awesome…but this is a dimensional shift in the process.” It now remains to be seen which Mercedes models will be the first recipient of this tech in the coming months.
