The performance-focused sedan could arrive on our shores later this year

It's raining performance cars lately! Following the unveiling of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, Mercedes-Benz has now revealed its new performance E-Class saloon, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid.

“The E-Class has been one of our most popular models for decades and we want to build on this with the new E 53 HYBRID. The vehicle offers typical AMG driving pleasure with excellent responsiveness, great driving dynamics and a sporty design. As a plug-in hybrid, the E 53 HYBRID combines mighty performance with efficiency. Thanks to the high electric range, many everyday journeys can be completed purely electrically. At the same time, the vehicle comes with extensive standard equipment, including fully variable all-wheel drive and active rear-axle steering. In this way, we offer our customers a vehicle that is perfect for their high demands,” says, Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of Business Units Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach

Sportier intentions are evident at first glance. With typical AMG aesthetics, the E53 Hybrid features illuminated AMG-spec vertical slats at the front, flanking the headlights. The bumper has been tweaked for a more compact and sportier look. Up top, a subtle spoiler lip on the trunk complements the dual exhaust and diffuser, completing its appearance.

Inside, the cabin retains the standard E-Class feel with a few exceptions: AMG-branded seats, an AMG-specific display, a Napa leather-wrapped steering wheel, and touches of carbon fibre finish on the central console. The dashboard consists of digital displays, including an optional third passenger-side screen. While the layout of the infotainment system may be similar, the graphics are AMG-specific, aligning with the sportier theme of the car.

Under the hood, the AMG E 53 hybrid is powered by a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine, which, combined with the electric motor, produces 585PS and 750Nm. Engaging the launch control option temporarily boosts power output to 612PS, resulting in a rapid 0-100kmph sprint of 3.8 seconds, with a restricted top speed of 280kmph.

As a hybrid, the AMG E 53 offers an all-electric range of 100km, with a top speed of up to 140kmph, according to Mercedes. The plug-in battery can be charged from 10 per cent to 80 per cent in just 20 minutes using a 60kW DC fast charger. Additionally, the hybrid comes with EV features such as regenerative modes and one-pedal drive capabilities.

While official confirmation is pending, the hybrid may arrive on our shores following the introduction of the new LWB E-Class, expected in the second half of the year. Priced around the Rs 2 crore mark, the AMG E 53 hybrid will compete against the BMW M5, Porsche Panamera, and Audi RS7.
