Honda Finally Unveils The Suzuka Track Record Breaking Civic Type-R

The Civic Type-R broke the track record at Suzuka with a timing of 2:23.12

Remember back when a camo-laden Honda Civic Type-R broke the track record at Suzuka? Well, after what feels like an eternity, Honda has finally showcased the new generation hot hatch today. The performance-focused Civic Type-R has been riding high on expectations set up by enthusiasts, and while not many details are out yet, here’s what we know so far.

Honda hasn’t tinkered around with the design too much and honestly, that’s great news. “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” right? It maintains its clean and minimal bodywork, but now gets beefier air intakes, a honeycomb grille and sportier 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.

At the rear, the new Civic now gets a wing, along with a slightly modified diffuser and a sweet-looking triple-exhaust setup. To drive home its sporty nature, the interiors now come finished in red and black theme. Along with it, you also get a race-spec 10.2-inch touchscreen unit, which can collect onboard data and show the car’s performance in real-time.

Honda claims the new Type-R will be powered by an “evolved” version of the 2.0-litre turbocharged motor, seen on the outgoing model. Without dwelling on details further, the automaker added that the Type-R would have an improved power-to-weight ratio, torque and top speed. For reference, the previous-gen model makes 320PS of power.

What’s more interesting here though is that Honda seems to have kept the Type-R’s powertrain as a pure ICE offering. It continues to sport a front-wheel drive (FWD) setup, with a six-speed manual gear shifter. In a nutshell, Honda is keeping it old school and we’re loving it.

All details of the 2022 Type-R will be revealed when it goes on sale in Japan this September. Considering that Honda will most likely not bring it to India, we recommend taking a trip to the land of the rising sun to check this beauty out in person.
