Ferrari has unveiled the open-top version of its 296 GTB, and it sure is a looker. Called the Ferrari 296 GTS, the mid-engine hybrid car is one of two models slated to be revealed this year. The other one, of course, is the highly-anticipated Ferrari Purosangue SUV.
Line up the 296 GTB and 296 GTS and there’s barely any difference except for the obvious retractable top on the latter. Ferrari claims the roof takes about 14 seconds to go up or down at speeds of up to 45kph.
Despite the same silhouette, minor design changes are seen on the Ferrari 296 GTS. One of which is the addition of a new rear window that can be adjusted for cabin comfort at high speeds. There’s also a new rear spoiler integrated into the tail, which should help with downforce while on the go.
Powering the 296 GTS is the same motor from the GTB. This 3.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V6 engine is paired with a rear-mounted electric motor, delivering a combined output of 841hp and 740Nm of torque.
Make sure you hold on to your hats though, as Ferrari claims that the GTS can go from 0 to 100kph in merely 2.9 seconds, with a top speed of 330kph, These are the same numbers the hard-top model puts out, despite being 70kg lighter.
Just like the GTB, the 296 GTS convertible can be configured with Ferrari’s track-oriented Assetto Fiorano package which gets you carbon-fibre aero bits, high-performance Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres, and adjustable shock absorbers.
Ferrari is yet to confirm if the car will be brought to India. Although, we do expect it to be in showrooms by early next year.
