US automobile giant Tesla has finally made its entry in India. The Elon Musk-led company

 

has registered in Karnataka’s Bengaluru, which is known to be a hub for global technology

 

companies, and is also commonly referred to as the “Silicon Valley of India”. Chief Minister

 

BS Yediyurappa confirmed the setting up of its R&D unit in Bengaluru on Twitter.

 

Yediyurappa tweeted: “Karnataka will lead India’s journey towards Green Mobility. Electric

 

Vehicle Manufacturer Tesla will soon start its operations in India with an R&D unit in

 

Bengaluru. I welcome Elon Musk to India and Karnataka and wish him all the very best.”

Tesla is reportedly also exploring options with five state governments to set up operations in

 

the country. Tesla Motors India and Energy Private Limited was incorporated on January 8

 

with its registered office in Bengaluru, The regulatory filing shows the Indian unit has three

 

directors including David Feinstein, who is currently a senior executive at Tesla, according to

 

his LinkedIn profile.

 

In a reply to a tweet last month, Musk had indicated Tesla’s entry in the Indian market in

 

2021. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had also announced Tesla’s arrival in India. In

 

December, he said the Tesla Model 3, which is the cheapest among the vehicles of the

 

company (prices starting at roughly Rs 55 lakh) will be launched first in India.

 

The news of Tesla’s arrival comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is

 

promoting the manufacture of electric cars in India. Over the years, the country has seen an

 

influx of imported Tesla cars.
