With their upright ergonomics, powerful engines, and superbike-spec handling, naked sports bikes (often called ‘streetfighters’ or ‘supernakeds’) are a big hit with buyers in India. Full-on superbikes, with their very low handlebars, stiff suspension and riding positions best suited to the track rather than the street, can be a challenging proposition for many riders. Supernakeds are a bit more forgiving; they feed the soul with ample high-horsepower thrills without murdering your back and wrists.

The latest entrant in the streetfighter segment is   BMW’s new  2021-spec  S 1000 R, launched today. Ex-showroom prices start at Rs 17.90 lakh for the standard model, going up to Rs 19.75 lakh for the Pro model and Rs 22.50 lakh for the range-topping Pro M Sport variant. A 3-year, unlimited mileage warranty is standard on all variants.

The second-generation S 1000 R   comes with a  revised styling that makes it look sharper and edgier. There is a new design LED headlamp, upgraded bodywork, adjustable seat height and an expanded array of colours. The significant change is in the engine. The bike boasts of a 999cc inline-four that produces 165 horsepower and 114Nm of torque. Not surprising then that the bike goes from zero to 100kph in just 3.2 seconds and hits an electronically limited top speed of 250kph.

The new S 1000 R also features revised gear ratios (4th, 5th, and 6th gears are longer), which help reduce noise, improve fuel efficiency and makes for more relaxed high-speed cruising. The front forks and rear mono-shock are fully adjustable for preload and compression/rebound damping. In addition, there is a full suite of electronics, including ABS, adjustable multi-level traction control, riding modes for optimised power delivery, a colour TFT instrument panel, adaptive headlights and… the list is pretty much endless.

‘The second generation of the all-new BMW S 1000 R is designed as a power-packed roadster with supreme riding dynamics, athletic character combined with maximum safety and everyday practicality. We are delighted to offer yet another masterpiece for riding enthusiasts in India,’ says Vikram Pawah, President, BMW Group India. To make the bike more accessible to customers, BMW Financial Services India will also offer customised and flexible financial solutions. Customers can get their loans pre-approved before delivery.
