The tides in the Indian automotive market seem to be shifting. For the first time in many months, last month's highest-selling car was not an SUV but a hatchback. With that said, here are five of the highest-selling cars of May:
Maruti Suzuki Swift
The segment king has made a remarkable comeback. Launched a month ago, the 2024 Maruti Suzuki Swift is now the highest-selling car of May. Around 19,393 units of the hatchback were sold last month, registering a year-over-year (YoY) growth of a whopping 12 per cent. In the same month last year, Maruti Suzuki sold 17,346 units.
Tata Punch
Last month’s chart-topper had to settle for second place. The all-new and extensively updated Tata Punch sold 18,949 units in May, registering a YoY growth of 70 per cent. The 2024 Punch was launched earlier this year with a comprehensive set of design, feature, and mechanical updates.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
Following closely behind the Tata Punch was the Maruti Suzuki Dzire. Reports indicate that around 16,061 units of this sedan were sold in May, registering a YoY growth of 42 per cent compared to May 2023.
Hyundai Creta
Hyundai also updated one of its most popular offerings, the Creta, this year. Launched in both standard and N-spec avatars, the SUV sold 14,662 units in May, marking a YoY growth of just 1 per cent.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
The market for budget hatchbacks seems to be slowly diminishing. Once among the most popular choices for the masses, the Wagon R registered a negative YoY growth of 11 per cent, selling just 14,492 units in May. This is a significant drop from the 16,258 units sold in the same month of 2023.
Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
After consistently finishing in the top five for several months, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza slid down the rankings, selling 14,146 units in May. This was a YoY growth of just 6 per cent compared to May 2023.
