Mahindra surprised us on Independence Day by unveiling the Thar.e concept at its Cape Town event. The all-electric SUV was revealed for the first time in its five-door form, boasting a robust and apocalypse-ready appearance.

Finished with squared-out LED tail lamps, the Thar.e concept measures longer than its ICE counterpart, featuring a wheelbase of 2975mm to accommodate the battery pack and two additional doors.

Sitting on a raised suspension setup, the electric Thar sports a boxy and upright look, with a rectangular grille dominating the front and a chunky front bumper.

The interiors also tell a different story, with a minimal look consisting of a flat dashboard, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a centre-mounted touchscreen system.

The Thar.e will not be built on Mahindra’s ladder-frame chassis and will utilize the company’s new INGLO dedicated EV platform known as the “P1”.

Although the specific details remain undisclosed, reports suggest that Mahindra is likely to utilize a Volkswagen-sourced 60kWh battery pack as well as a larger 80kWh battery pack, providing a range of 325km and 450km respectively.

While there is no specific timeline yet, we suspect the Thar.e will go into production during the same time as the Maruti Suzuki Jimny EV."
