The homecoming of Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians is finally confirmed, after days of back-and-forth. To accommodate Pandya, Mumbai Indians released Cameron Green, who was snapped up by Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Pandya moved to Gujarat Titans two years ago, when two new teams were introduced in the Indian Premier League.

Pandya exceeded everyone's expectations by leading the team to the IPL title in their debut season. If that was not enough, he once again led Gujarat Titans to the IPL final, where they unfortunately lost to Chennai Super Kings.

In these two seasons, Pandya has shown his captaincy pedigree. If rumours are to be believed, the star all-rounder left Gujarat Titans because Mumbai Indians have identified him as the captaincy successor to Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma is one of the most successful captains in the Indian Premier League, having led Mumbai to five championship titles. But he is 36 and also captains the Indian team in all formats.

Thus it's not long before Rohit Sharma decides to hang up his boots, and in Hardik Padya, Mumbai Indians will already will have a proven captain.
