Titan Marks 40 Years with a Tribute to India’s 'First Man In Space'

Titan's 2024 focus on space comes to a crescendo with this emotive tribute to India's early explorations of the cosmos

In a moment of nostalgic celebration, Titan Watches unveiled the Unity Watch, a limited-edition timepiece honouring Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian in space, on the 40th anniversary of his historic space mission. The watch pays tribute to Sharma’s 1984 journey aboard Soyuz T-11, where his iconic declaration, “Saare Jahaan Se Achha,” captured the spirit of a unified India. Titan’s homage intertwines its legacy of innovation with a milestone that has inspired generations.

Unveiled during an intimate ceremony at Bengaluru’s Lupa, the Unity Watch draws from Sharma’s celestial view of Earth, blending artistry and precision to convey a message of unity and shared dreams. Limited to just 300 pieces, the first watch was presented to Sharma, who reminisced about his transformative experience in space, reflecting on the perspective it gave him of an Earth without borders. His call for global cooperation over conflict resonates deeply in the watch’s design ethos.

Crafted by Titan’s in-house team, the Unity Watch is a masterclass in subtle sophistication and inventive design. Its midnight blue dial portrays a detailed map of India as seen from space, complemented by tricolour hour markers that evoke the Indian flag. A rocket-shaped second hand is a charming nod to Sharma’s voyage, while the back of the watch bears the engraving of his historic words, alongside the date of his expedition. Completing the design is a sleek deep blue leather strap, exuding understated elegance.

At the launch, Titan’s Vice President Rahul Shukla emphasised the brand’s commitment to innovation and the “Make in India” initiative, highlighting parallels between watchmaking and space exploration. Titan’s journey over four decades has been one of blending Indian heritage with modern craftsmanship, and the Unity Watch exemplifies this duality.

Sharma, visibly moved, shared that Titan had encapsulated his view from space, offering a powerful reminder of the unity that transcends boundaries. He noted how the timepiece serves as more than a commemorative object—it symbolises the limitless potential of every Indian and the collective progress toward peace and discovery.

The Unity Watch is not just a celebration of past achievements but also a statement of ambition and artistry. As Titan marks its 40th year, this timepiece stands as a testament to its enduring legacy and vision for the future. Available in select stores and online, the Unity Watch invites enthusiasts to own a piece of history, embodying both India’s pioneering spirit and its boundless aspirations.
