Akon officially has a city named after him called “Akon City” in Senegal. The Grammy-nominated rapper and entrepreneur announced, on Monday, that he had finalized the agreement for the new city. The artist posed with Senegalian officials and confirmed the news on his social media handles.
According to CNN, the rapper who is of Senegalese descent had previously announced that the city would be built on a 2,000-acre land gifted to him by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall. Akon City would trade with his own exclusive digital cash currency “Akoin.”
The rapper had previously explained to Nick Cannon during an interview on Power 106 Los Angeles: “It’s a 10-year building block so we’re doing it in stages. We started construction in March (2019) and stage two is going to be 2025.” He also told Cannon that the Akon City is “all renewable, the Akon-tainment solar city.” The city will be the first one to become Senegal’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified cities.
“I really want to make the biggest impact in Africa for sure,” Akon said during a 2013 interview with CNN. “If I could have my way, Africa would be the United States of Africa.”
