Ever heard the term ‘shadowbanning’? It’s that monster which keeps aspiring ‘influencers’ up at night. The notorious ‘shadowban’ on Instagram can come for you for a multitude of reasons and one of them happens to be your choice of hashtags.
If you’ve ever searched for a particular hashtag and either come up with nothing at all or only a dozen pictures or so with the statement “recent posts from #(whatever you’re searching for) are currently hidden because the community has reported some content that may not meet Instagram’s community guidelines” at the bottom of the screen, then you know what a banned hashtag is.
While certain pornography related hashtags or other such inappropriate material faces an outright ban, other hashtags like ‘adulting’ turn up only a few search results. Nick Drew, a social media analyst told the Huffington Post that “there are two levels of censorship” and that “hashtags can either have an outright block, and return no results, or a sort of ‘soft,’ often more temporary censorship with around 30 results”.
According to MamaMia.com.au, here are a list of current hashtags that are banned:
- #adultlife
- #beautyblogger
- #costumes
- #desk
- #eggplant
- #fitnessgirls
- #goddess
- #happythanksgiving
- #ig

- #lingerie

- #nasty
- #overnight
- #petite
- #skype

While we cannot independtly verify the list, the website quotes a research by the Preview App which compiled the aforementioned set of banned hashtags.
