We’ve known for a while that Naughty Dog and Sony are working on a The Last of Us Part 1 remaster for the PS5. And while the video game is still some time away from release, it’s already been grabbing the headlines for all the bad reasons. Leaked footage of the remaster was posted on Reddit and Twitter, drawing a huge backlash from the fans.
The leaks which are still posted on r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, show various screengrabs of the game with improved graphics. While that should be considered good news, fans can’t help but question the intention behind the remaster, with many claiming it to be a cheap cash-grab attempt.
Similarly, the changes incorporated in the remaster have not sat well with the fans. Users on Reddit have long been complaining about Joel and Ellie’s animation “looking off”. A fan by the name of gutster_95 even posted a side-by-side comparison of the original game and the remaster, with the caption, “I don’t know what people are smoking, but this doesn’t look like a scaled-up version of TLoU Remastered.” Similarly, Twitter user TheZodiacGamer’s echoed the sentiment saying, “Joel’s face is more detailed undeniably, but now he looks like a tired, confused old man instead of the tough survivor who’s seen a lot of s–t, like the original.”
This isn’t the first time Naughty Dog has tinkered with the original game. The Last of Us, which initially came out in 2013 and garnered commercial and critical acclaim, got its first remaster in 2014 for the PS4. Now, with The Last of Us Part 1 remake scheduled to release on September 2, 2022, fans are wondering if the $80 price tag for a nine-year-old game is worth paying.
Here’s how the internet has reacted
