Sourav Ganguly made his debut at Lord’s on June 22, 1996 and was due to bat in the vacant number three position. Before the game started, there was a lot of talk about how the youngster has played in the domestic circuit and will he be able to perform at such a high level where the stakes and standards are unmatched. England were batting first in this all important test and were bundled out for 344 runs with the experienced Venkatesh Prasad taking five wickets for the visitors. Ganguly came out to bat at number three and smashed an epic century full of boundaries. His innings was filled with determination, and showed calm in pressure situations. Ganguly played like a player who has been doing this for years and has been playing at the international stage for a long time now. Ganguly scored 131 runs off 301 balls and got out when India were 296 for 6. He batted with fellow debutant and now India legend, Rahul Dravid who fell short off five runs from his century. By this epic knock, Gnaguly entered the record books, as the player to score the highest score by a debutant at Lord’s. This record was also intact for about twenty-five years and was broken a couple of weeks ago by New Zealand’s Devon Conway. England played well after India took a lead of eighty five runs and hung on till the end to salvage a draw.
But this match will always be remembered for the heroics of Sourav Ganguly and what he has accomplished since this milestone knock. He has scored many such crucial knocks in his illustrious career but this one stood out for us.
