Aymeric Laporte, 26, is one of the brightest young center backs playing for Manchester City in the Premier League. He has won a lot of trophies in his time in Manchester, and will continue to do so. Aymeric is a crucial member of the Manchester City squad, and has been a great addition to the backline in keeping the record of the best defense in the premier league this season. He was brought in the summer of 2018 for a whopping transfer fee of 58 million pounds.

Earlier this week, FIFA approved the switch of nation for Aymeric Laporte from France to Spain. In the annual FIFA meet last year, it was decided that any player who hadn’t started for their country for more than three occasions, before the age of 21, and had not featured at a World Cup or continental tournament, will have an option of switching countries. Laporte has joined an impressive list of players who have changed countries, most notably, Diego Costa, who shifted to Spain from Brazil in 2013.

Laporte had represented France in all the junior levels, but was yet to start the senior squad or even be selected for the senior team. With France having so many established center backs like Varane, Umtiti, and Lenglet, and the upcoming city of center backs like Diop, Konate, and Upamecano, France won’t be bothered that much with the loss of a center back. On the other hand, Spain would have loved to have a player like Laporte in their squad. This comes because Spain does not have great players left at that particular position. Although they still have the services of players Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos, it remains to be seen who will be their starting center back partnership for the Euros.

Laporte had made over 50 appearances for the French side in the youth ranks, but his decision of switching countries doesn’t come as much of a surprise. According to media reports, he had a major fallout with Didier Deschamps and the French Football Federation. After the fallout, Laporte knew that he wouldn’t represent France, and it would be the best decision to move to a country like Spain, where he has played a lot in the initial stages of his career and made a name for himself. Only time will tell if this was a good decision or a decision taken in haste by Aymeric Laporte.
