Cancer doesn’t discriminate, and while some people may not have the disease despite years of leading an unhealthy lifestyle, some might have it despite being fitter than most people. The treatment can take a lot out of a person, but some people have fought the disease and emerged stronger.  They serve as an inspiration not just for those battling the disease, but for each one of us – that a setback isn’t always fatal, and we must fight till the very end. 

Yuvraj Singh

Yuvraj Singh couldn’t believe it when he had cancer, considering he’s a fit athlete. Not only did he fight the disease successfully, he also battled excruciating pain to play the 2011 World Cup where he was the man of the series. In his book, The Test Of My Life, Yuvraj writes, “I was not going to feel sorry for myself. No, why should I? When my form came back, or when I picked up wickets, or when I got the big scores, or when I got player of the match, or hit six sixes, had I ever asked God, ‘why me?’ Of course not. Often in my career, I have been the man with silver in the fist. Have I ever asked God, ‘why me?’ No, never. So when the illness came I had no right to ask ‘why me?”

Lisa Ray

Lisa Ray was diagnosed with blood cancer, and was cured by a stem-cell transplant. “Cancer has transformed my life in so many ways. I drew so much support from people all around the world especially India because I was open about my cancer diagnosis. It did make me very nervous before making public because I didn’t know how people would react. But thankfully, I received great support,” she said in a press conference.

“When I first heard the news back in Kathmandu, I was in total disbelief. I couldn’t think something as drastic as this would hit me. But in my family we have had [cancer] incidents, so it wasn’t surprising. I had just visited my aunt in United States who was battling breast cancer in its early stage,” she told India Today.

“I had just finished Murder , got married to my girlfriend and we were expecting our first baby when I was diagnosed with leukaemia. It was like a filmy anticlimax where everything was going just right in my life when I was told this shocking news. Initially, I did not take it seriously but then I realised it was very bad. The cancer cells were multiplying fast and the doctors kept altering my chances of survival from 50:50 to two months to finally two weeks. Then I heard about Doctor Sripad Banawali at Tata Memorial whose medication was different from the rest and who said that there may be a chance,” Anurag Basu said in an interview with The Times Of India.
