Akbar Padamsee’s Greek Landscape, the third of four spectacular works in grey to be offered on auction, trumped all expectations, setting a new world record price for the artist. The 4.3 x 12 foot canvas, doubled its upper estimate and was sold for a whopping 19.19 crores (USD 2.9 million).

So we did a little digging to find out which paintings are the five most expensive works by Indian artists. Check out the complete list of the Top 50 here. 

In number five we have S.H. Raza’s La Terre at 18.61 crores. Padamsee’s Greek Landscape has now knocked Raza to the sixth position.

Number four is Tyeb Mehta’s violent but poignant Mahishasura at 19.78 crores

V.S. Gaitonde is at number three with this enigmatic untitled piece that sold for 23.70 crores in 2013.

FN Souza knocked Gaitonde off the second spot last year with his Birth that sold for 26.90 crores.

In number one, we have another untitled work by V.S. Gaitonde that sold last year for a  grand 29.60 crores.
