In a tragic development during the wee hours of Sunday morning, Bollywood actress Sridevi passed away in Dubai as a result of a massive cardiac arrest in Dubai. She was 54 and is survived by husband Boney Kapoor and daughters Jahnvi and Khushi. Amongst rumours of it being an internet hoax, the news of her death was confirmed by her brother-in-law Sanjay Kapoor.
Sridevi was with her family attending nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding in Dubai. Reports suggest that before the cardiac arrest, she had opted to stay back after the wedding in Dubai.
Sridevi’s death has shocked legions of her fans and the industry alike. Followers gathered outside her Mumbai residence to express their grief while Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted his commiserations this morning.
“Saddened by the untimely demise of noted actor Sridevi. She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances. My thoughts are with her family and admirers in this hour of grief. May her soul rest in peace,” he said.
Sridevi, who made her acting debut at the age of four, had many big hits like Chandni and was especially noted for her impeccable timing as a comedienne. She took a 15-year-long break from movies in 1997, a year after her marriage, before making her Bollywood comeback with Gauri Shinde’s English Vinglish in 2012.
She was last seen in her home production Mom. The thriller, like most of her recent works garnered positive response from critics and even attracted audiences to box offices.
Another day, another legend lost. RIP Sridevi.
