Buckle up, folks! NFTs are now headed to Instagram, according to CEO, Mark Zuckerberg. While we don’t know the exact date yet, Zuckerberg did state it would be arriving “in the near term.”
During his talk at the South By Southwest Film Festival, Zuckerberg added, “I’m not ready to kind of announce exactly what that’s going to be today. But over the next several months, the ability to bring some of your NFTs in, hopefully over time be able to mint things within that environment.”
While details are thin on how exactly the integration would look like, Zuckerberg did confirm that Instagram will allow users to showcase their existing NFTs and also mint new ones. If done correctly, this could open up the NFT marketplace to a much larger audience. So far, buying and trading of them is only limited to a few platforms like OpenSea.io.
This news doesn’t come as a surprise, considering Instagram’s top executive Adam Mosseri had previously commented on how the company was “actively exploring” the technology.
During the same event, Zuckerberg also teased the idea of introducing NFTs to the company’s metaverse, saying “I would hope that you know, the clothing that your avatar is wearing in the metaverse, you know, can be basically minted as an NFT and you can take it between your different places. There’s like a bunch of technical things that need to get worked out before that’ll really be seamless to happen.”
