According to a recent brand valuation study, Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor have emerged as the only two celebrities in the country with more than a $100 million valuation.
American Appraisal, a US consultancy firm that conducted this study, has calculated a celebrity’s brand valuation based on their reputation, credibility and ability to generate income from endorsements, apart from the annual endorsement revenue that they earn after deducting relevant costs, including taxes. Varun Gupta, MD at American Appraisal India, told The Economic Times, “We found that the brand value changed dramatically based on performance and delivery in the celebrity’s area of core competence. A string of failures impact celebrity value very rapidly.”
Others who follow SRK and the Kapoor scion on this list are cricketers Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli, whose brand values are $72 million (around Rs 44 crore) and $56.4 million (around Rs 34 crore) respectively. Actors Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are the only women to make it onto the list, with the average endorsement fee for a female star being almost half of their male counterparts’ average annual fee.
With Happy New Year getting the biggest box-office opening of all time in the domestic market (more than Rs 44 crore on the first day), his champion IPL cricket team and his many endorsements, it’s safe to say that the King of Bollywood is having a fabulous year.
