Lil Nas X’s Old Town Road has become the longest-running US number-one single of all time. The rapper took to Instagram to share an emoji-filled message for his fans.
“Last year in October, as a struggling artist starting to lose faith in what I could be, I went looking for beats on Youtube,” he wrote, adding: “I remember clicking on so many generic sounding beats trying to find the right one for me when suddenly I came across a country-trap sounding masterpiece. I immediately knew I would make something special out of it.”
Mariah Carey, the gracious diva that she is, sent out a tweet congratulating the rapper and literally passing the torch on to him.
“Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest-running records in music history! We’ve been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @BoyzIIMen and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life!” Carey tweeted.
Naturally, Lil Nas X responded with a tweet of his own.
According to Billboard, before Old Town Road broke the record with its 17th week at the top of the chart, Carey and Boyz II Men’s 1995 duet One Sweet Day had set 16 weeks at number one as the record.
