They say that age cools down the fieriest of them. One hopes that is not the case with Salman Rushdie. When the man is not writing a book, he’s busy wooing a famous socialite – that’s exactly how we’d like him to be. But, after his last novel, The Enchantress of Florence, published in 2008, Rushdie has not been in the limelight in the recent years. One wonders if the bad boy of magic realism is having a turn of heart.
But good news for his fans – Rushdie is ready with his new novel being published by Random House. The man might have gone soft and is taking it slow, but, evidently, there’s no stopping him from speaking his mind.
His new novel, ‘Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights’, sounds like a typical Rushdie concoction. According to the publishers, it has been defined as a blend of history, mythology and a timeless love story to bring alive a world that has been plunged into an age of unreason. The title of the book is a reference to the Arabian Nights.
Considering all the buzz and scandals his book releases enjoy, Rushdie has been uncharacteristically low-key and composed about this one. Last year, he spoke about the book at the Cheltenham Literature Festival in southwest England – “It’s not long. It will be something like 250 pages, which is like clearing my throat. I have finally learned how to shut up.”
