As many reports had suggested last week, Facebook has announced a change of name. The rebranding to ‘Meta’ comes as the solidification of the redirection in the company’s efforts towards the building of a metaverse.
“Announcing Meta — the Facebook company’s new name,” the tech giant said in a tweet. “Meta is helping to build the metaverse, a place where we’ll play and connect in 3D. Welcome to the next chapter of social connection.”
Have we ever known the internet to pass up on any opportunity of a meme-fest?
Many announcing a change of name of their own;
Some also had questions;
Some netizens seem ready for the metaverse;
But it is not only fun and games;
Along with the somewhat mixed reaction there seems to be a small, collective voice stating legitimate concern. Facebook, or what is now known as Meta, has been known and exposed to resort to certain practises that have made the people lose faith in the conglomerate. The world is becoming vary of the harms of using social media as it exists today and many have chosen to remain vocal about the same. It makes sense for some to have many more inhibitions when the brand that owns and runs most of social media today would be penetrating the lives of its users more than ever.
