Barack Obama’s Original High School Basketball Jersey Is Now Up For Auction

The bidding for the jersey has already begun and currently sits at $40,000 USD

A basketball jersey worn by the 44th President of United States Of America can be all yours now. The former president’s jersey worn by him during his basketball days is being auctioned off.

The jersey is currently owned by Peter Nobel, a fellow Punahou High School alumni who graduated three years after the former president. He wore the same “23” as Obama while playing junior varsity, and saved the jersey from being discarded when new uniforms hit campus.

The bidding for the number 23 jersey has already begun and is currently sitting at $40,000 USD (more than Rs 27 lakh). The number 23 is an iconic number since it has been on the backs of some of the world’s best basketball players of all time like Michael Jordan and Lebron James.

According to Heritage, Obama’s jersey was “fortuitously rescued from being discarded when the new varsity jerseys arrived on campus only because our consignor Peter Noble, three years behind Obama at Punahou, had worn the same number ’23’ jersey while on the junior varsity team.”

Along with the jersey, the winner of the auction will also be going home with a copy of the 1979 yearbook that includes a photo of Obama in the jersey along with the caption “Barry Obama goes up for a basket against St. Louis.”
