The man responsible for the annoyingly catchy ‘Happy’ wears many hats, one of which is labelled ‘designer’. Last month, Pharrell Williams launched a collection of sneakers (along with Kanye West and Nigo) in collaboration with adidas Originals, apart from joining forces with COMME des GARCONS for a special fragrance called G I R L. This month, he’s teamed up with Moynat to create a capsule collection of bags.
Moynat, one of the oldest French trunk-makers, is now run by Ramesh Nair (Hermès alumnus and a NIFT graduate). Pharrell’s and Nair’s inspiration comes from a 1940s musical called ‘The Harvey Girls’ as well as Jimi Hendrix’s classic ‘Hear My Train A Comin’. The result? A locomotive-themed line of luxury bags, with a recurring motif of steam trains; the collection also includes a hand-tooled resin bag, a hand-sculpted ebony wood clutch and leather pouches.
Describing the collection, Nair said, “All grown-ups were once children… but only a few remember it.” The Moynat x Pharrell Williams line is due for release on 13th October at Colette in Paris, 20th October at the Moynat boutiques in Paris and London and later at the Moynat Trunk Show at Isetan Shinjuku, Tokyo and Dover Street Market, New York.
