Blizzard might be in for another “Do you guys not have phones?” moment later this year. According to the firm’s quarterly earnings report, Blizzard is said to be “planning substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022, including new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, and getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time.”
Rumours of a Warcraft mobile game have been going around since 2017, but it’s only the recent statement that finally confirmed this speculation. Although no details have been shared about the mobile-based MMO, Blizzard did reveal that it has multiple Warcraft projects in “advanced development.”
Until now, the game’s presence on a mobile device has only been limited to Hearthstone, a free-to-play online digital collectable card game, released way back in 2014. If we had to guess, the upcoming title might be a Pokemon GO-styled AR game.
But Warcraft isn’t the only mobile version of a popular franchise Blizzard plans to release this year. The (in)famous Diablo: Immortal is planned for a 2022 release as well. As far as what “substantial new content” might entail, we suggest you keep your expectations low. More often than not, it is marketing speak for new expansions or updates.
A recent earnings report revealed that Call of Duty Mobile made over a billion dollars! With Toonami entering the mobile game market and Candy Crush still topping the charts on the app store, the news doesn’t really come as a surprise.
Reactions to the Warcraft news, however, have been fairly positive…well almost:
