Mercedes-Benz recently showcased a one-off creation which defies the laws of physics… because it doesn’t have to obey any. The German automaker took the “cover” off its latest virtual showcar as part of its partnership with the 2022 League of Legends World Championship. And no, it will not be going into production or even concept form anytime soon.
Hailed simply as the “virtual showcar” the Mercedes creation resembles a spaceship more than a car. Clad in shiny metallic light blue, the virtual car sports a smooth, flowy design, housing a bubble in the centre for its animated passengers. Look closely and you’ll also notice the wheels seemingly blending into the bodywork. Get why we said it won’t be hitting the production lines any time soon?
While it may not have any physical footprint in the material world, designing it was no easy task as per Gorden Wagener, Mercedes’ chief design officer. “When designing an extraordinary and virtual show car, two worlds merge – real automotive design and animated design,” said Wagener. “Because of the virtual space, there are no limits to what we can do, which means we can push boundaries and give our creativity the space for the unexpected. The result is something unique: the first all-virtual show car from Mercedes-Benz.”
Surprisingly, this isn’t the first time Mercedes has unveiled a fictional car. The manufacturer also came up with the Mercedes-AMG Vision Gran Turismo concept, which could be digitally driven in the video game, nearly a decade ago. However, the automaker did actually build a real-world version of that concept.
This isn’t the only piece of Mercedes-Benz x Riot Games concept we’ll see. From November 3, Mercedes’ EQS digital display will showcase elements taken from the video game on its 56-inch MBUX system.
