Apple Music is offering Lossless Audio, Dolby Atmos, and Spatial Audio to users of its music streaming service in India.

The new features were first made available to Apple Music users in the US and other global markets back in June before making their way to Indian devices. The new features come at no additional cost and are available for all users of Apple Music across iOS and iPadOS, MacOS, and Apple TV.

What are they?

According to Apple, “Most audio compression techniques lose some amount of data contained in the original source file. Lossless compression is a form of compression that preserves all of the original data.” But the tech isn’t new, a few streaming platforms have used versions of this before.

Lossless music requires a strong data connection. If the network is not good enough to stream lossless audio, it will switch down to the best possible quality.

And about spatial audio, the information reads, “Apple’s spatial audio is a 360-degree sound format that recreates a surround effect through even a tiny pair of earbuds.”

AirPods Pro and AirPods Max support automatic play with spatial audio. AirPods, BeatsX, Beats Solo3 Wireless, Beats Studio3, Powerbeats3 Wireless, Beats Flex, Powerbeats Pro, or Beats Solo Pro, built-in speakers on an iPhone XR or later (except iPhone SE), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later), iPad Pro 11-inch, iPad (6th generation or later), iPad Air (3rd generation or later), or iPad mini (5th generation) are other supported devices.

Users that have the latest update, 14.7, should already be able to enjoy the features. They have to be activated through settings. To do that, once you open the Settings menu, tap the specific settings for Apple Music and slide the toggle for Lossless Audio to on. You can also activate Dolby Atmos from these settings.

On the Apple Music app, clear tags are visible for Lossless and Spatial audio along with the album art.

Along with these features, Apple has also rolled out a plethora of curated playlists for Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos to help discover tracks available in these formats, including various tracks from Indian artistes such as AR Rahman and Badshah. On iOS, the resolution is prominently displayed when tracks are playing, and tapping on the icon shows the exact resolution of the track.

Apple has indicated that the new features for Apple Music in India will be coming to the Android app soon. However, not many details on the timeline are available at the moment.
