There is a reason why India’s national sport is Hockey and not any other sport. Hockey has been played in India for more than a century now, and even though the public thinks that it doesn’t get enough recognition or views, that’s a myth. Most Indian public might not know this, but the Indian Men’s hockey team is the most successful in the Olympics. They have won the gold medal at the Olympics eight times which is not even matched by any other country at the Olympic games. But what is it that makes the Indian Men’s team the most incredible team ever to participate in the Olympic Games?

India has the best overall performance in Hockey in the Olympic games since its inception. India has seventy-seven victories out of one hundred and twenty-six matches. This record is unmatched by any other country globally and will continue to be dominated by the Indians for many decades to come. From 1928 to 1956, India won six consecutive gold medals, which is a record even today. The golden era of Indian Hockey ended with a gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The main reason for India’s success at the world stage in Hockey can be given to the Indian sports and the Indian Government. They invested in the sport at the right time, ensuring that the country’s name is heard through sports due to the Olympic games. This investment by the Government at the right place at the right time provided Indian fans and the public has something to celebrate. Then the reason we feel the focus has shifted to cricket because of the remarkable comeback win by India led by Kapil Dev and his team in the 1983 World Cup. That was the exact point where Indian fans started focussing on cricket more than Hockey, and it is being continued ever since then.
Indian Men’s team is still on the journey to get more gold medals added to their country’s tally and would be looking to win their ninth title this time around Tokyo.
