Where India's 2013 Champions Trophy Heroes Are Now?

Some have retired, some not in favour, and others are still going strong

In just over a month from now, the Champions Trophy will kickstart, with a clash between Pakistan and New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi. India will be playing their matches at neutral venues in Dubai. They won this tournament last time in 2013, when an MS Dhoni-led team defeated England by five runs in the final. The team was full of rising stars headed by a calm and composed captain. Twelve years later, we look at where are the heroes of that tournament.

Where are the 2013 Champions Trophy Players Today?

Rohit Sharma

When India won the Champions Trophy in 2013, Rohit Sharma was still a young, marauding batter with great potential but had not really cemented his place yet. Twelve years later, he is the captain of the Indian cricket team and an undisputed batting legend who captained the team to their second T20 World Cup title in 2024.

Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli's stardom was reaching its zenith in 2013. He became the most consistent batter across formats and was in the line to take over the captaincy duty from MS Dhoni. Kohli played a crucial knock in the final against England that helped India clinch the title. Kohli currently plays for the Indian test and ODI team, and also for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League.

Shikhar Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan's prolific form was the main reason India clinched the Champions Trophy in 2013. He started the tournament with a blazing knock against South Africa and never looked back. Dhawan retired from all forms of cricket last year in September. He is not associated with any teams in any capacity for now.

MS Dhoni

Two years after leading India to the 2011 ODI World Cup, MS Dhoni once again proved himself as a trailblazing leader by winning the Champions Trophy this time. He retired from the longest format of the game in 2014 and stood down from captaincy in the limited-overs format in 2017. Dhoni, 43, continues to be the face of the Chennai Super Kings. He will be seen in action in few months when the IPL begins.

Suresh Raina

Suresh Raina was undergoing a rough patch during this tournament, managing just 17 runs in an entire tournament. Raina retired from international cricket in 2022 and has transitioned into a full-time broadcaster. His last appearance for the Indian team came in 2017.

Ravindra Jadeja

The marque Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was still finding his feet back then. Jadeja had a fairly successful tournament, where he also scored 30 runs in the final. Jadeja is currently the mainstay of the Indian Test and ODI team and played his last T20I last year against South Africa in the final of the T20 World Cup.

Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik broke into the squad for the Champions Trophy on the back of a stellar domestic season. Karthik also featured in the T20 World Cup 2022, thanks to his resurgence as a lower-order hitter. He has retired from all forms of cricket and has become one of the most sought-after commentators in the world.

R Ashwin

R Ashwin's economical bowling helped India register a narrow victory in the final of the Champions Trophy. The offie went on to become arguably the greatest matchwinner of the Indian cricket. His shocking announcement came last year in the middle of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Ashwin dons multiple hats. He is a successful Youtuber and will be seen in the Indian Premier League, plying his trade for Chennai Super Kings.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar Kumar lived up to his reputation as someone who can make the ball do the talking on his good days. Bhuvneshwar constantly gave a great start to the Indian team, but because of injuries, his career never took off in the way many had hoped for. Bhuvneshwar will be returning back to his old franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore for the IPL 2025.

Ishant Sharma

Ishant Sharma has not yet confirmed his retirement, but his international career is well and truly over, with his last appearance for India coming in 2021. Sharma was acquired by Gujarat Titans in the mega auction for the Indian Premier League 2025.

Umesh Yadav

Umesh Yadav too hasn't announced his retirement from international cricket, but the team has moved on already. Umesh also went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
