We had an exciting line-up of football matches over the weekend. Unfortunately, there were no EPL matches over the weekend as the English teams had to play FA Cup matches. Let’s take a look at what happened.

FA Cup

Premier League leaders Chelsea advanced to the next round by thrashing Peterborugh by 4-1 margin. Pedro, Michy Batshuayi and Willian were the goal-scorers for Chelsea. The match also made news because of John Terry (Chelsea captain) receiving a straight red card for a challenge on Lee Angol. Fortunately for them, Chelsea were already leading by three goals when he was sent off.

In other matches, Manchester United thrashed Reading by a 4-0 margin, and Manchester City hammered West Ham United by a 5-0 margin. Unlike them, Arsenal didn’t have it easy and had to depend on 89th minute goal by Olivier GIroud to see them through the next round with a 2-1 win over Preston.

Spanish La Liga

Real Madrid maintained their top spot in the La Liga table with a thumping 5-0 victory over Granada. The table toppers have been unbeaten for 39 matches, and will establish a new record if they win or draw against Sevilla (second in the League) in their next match.

Barcelona didn’t have similar luck and were held to a 1-1 draw against Villareal. The draw poured water on their chances for the title, as they are now 5 points behind Real Madrid even though they have played one more match.  In other matches, Sevilla scored four goals to hand Real Sociedad a humiliating 4-0 defeat.
