In a country where cricket seems to steal the spotlight from other forms of sports, this skateboarding event held in Mumbai is a game-changer of sorts. Looks like the country’s skateboarding scene is finally taking off with regular events including the recently held skateboarding workshop and competition, in association with Nick Smith and XSAI, at the High Street Phoenix Courtyard, Lower Parel.
Hosted by Nick Smith, a major facilitator in Mumbai’s skateboarding scene and also referred to as the Godfather of the Indian skateboarding scene, the DC Skate Jam was a massive success with over 100 participants and more than 5000 onlookers. Nick is the founder of Holystoked, a skate collective in Bangalore, responsible for India’s first free public skate park. He is also the founder the Advaita Project which provides India’s youth the tools and knowledge to create a sustainable and self-determining community.
Together with the XSAI and DC shoes, this event showcased a unique half-pipe skate ramp mounted on a trailer truck where some of India’s best skateboarders displayed their tremendous skills amidst musical performances by Rapper HHB, Beat-boxing artist Vibe and DJ Nyugen Trung.
