There’s no questioning Virat Kohli’s batting prowess. Along with all his international records, he’s also neck-to-neck with Suresh Raina as the all-time leading run-scorer in the ongoing Indian Premier League. At a 130-plus strike rate, he has scored 4,735 runs including 33 fifties and four hundreds. And almost 3,000 out of these runs have come wearing the skipper’s armband.

However, his win/loss record as a captain isn’t something he would be particularly proud of. At the half-way stage in IPL 2018, Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore are second from last, collecting the lowest number of points (4) in seven games.

Moreover, he has the second worst record among captains who have played 50 or more matches (As of April 29) in the tournament behind Adam Gilchrist. In that bracket, these two captains are also the only ones to have lost more matches than they have won.

If we extend that filter to 40 games, Kohli’s win percentage (47.67) is the fifth worst among 13 such skippers. All other captains, including Yuvraj Singh and David Warner, have better rates of winning than the RCB leader.

Speaking of the eight active captains in the ongoing edition of the IPL, Kohli’s numbers are only better than Rajasthan Royals’ Ajinkya Rahane (who’s been captain for just eight games) and Kolkata Knight Rider’s Dinesh Karthik (the fringe Indian wicketkeeper whose career was given a new lease of life after that last ball six against Bangladesh).

Despite one of the strongest fan bases in IPL, RCB have only managed three final appearances in the last 10 seasons. Two of them have come under Kohli’s captaincy, but the big prize has always eluded the Kingfisher-owned franchise.

And given the way things have been unfolding in the recent week, it looks like they might have to wait for yet another year. Maybe the Indian captain Virat Kohli could come to the rescue of RCB captain Virat Kohli. Till then, we can only empathise with RCB fans.
