Jasprit Bumrah produced a scintillating display of fast bowling to humble the terrifying English batting lineup at Kennington Oval in London. Bumrah capitalised on the overcast conditions and moist pitch to end the game with his career-best 6/19.
He became the first Indian bowler to notch a five-wicket haul in England, and also broke Ashish Nehra’s record of best bowling figures against the same opponent. Just as Bumrah finished his spell, his wife Sanjana Ganesan was seen taking potshots at the English batters in the innings break.
Ganesan stood just outside the “crispy duck” stall, as a reference to Bumrah’s four victims that got out for ducks, and said, “We’ve come to a stall that not a lot of English batters would like to come to. It’s called the ‘Crispy Duck’. We’ve got a duck wrap is, and we will see how good the duck off-the-field is. Because the ducks on the field have been absolutely fantastic.”
On his second ball of the game, Bumrah managed to get a thick inside edge of Jason Roy’s swinging blade to give India a crucial breakthrough.
A ball later, he dismissed Joe Root with an absolute peach of delivery, that rose up awkwardly with a hint of inside movement. But the job was far from done against this English batting lineup, which has a knack for coming back to life despite copping heavy punches. In the next two overs, Bumrah sent both Liam Livingstone and an in-form Jonny Bairstow back to the pavilion to virtually kill the game.
Bumrah would take two more wickets in his last spell to wrap up the innings, and climb to the third position in the list of best bowling figures ever recorded by Indian bowlers in ODI.
India won the game by 10 wickets after Rohit Sharma made light work of this chase with his quickfire 76. He was ably assisted by his opening partner, Shikhar Dhawan, who walked back after making a composed 37.
