Tottenham Hotspur defeated the Southampton FC by a goal margin of 2-1. Son Heung-min’s late penalty goal helped Hotspur fight back, giving them a much needed victory which also handed interim head coach Ryan Mason a victory in his first match as an in-charge.

Former Spurs midfielder Mason took the charge of Hotspurs after Jose Mourinho was sacked by the team management. Mason also became the youngest Premier League head coach at the age of 29.

Danny Ings’ header on 30 minutes gave Southampton the lead of the game. Southampton looked dominant in the first half, and were able to hold their lead till the final whistle of the first-half.

In the second half of the game, Gareth Bale scored a superb equaliser, and brought Hotspur back into the game. 74 minutes into the game, Hotspur striker Son scored another goal, which gave them the lead of the match. However, the goal was handed as an offside by the VAR (Video Assistant Referees).

The goal line stood 1-1 till the 89-minute mark. At the end of the 90-minute mark, Hotspur received a penalty kick, which the Hotspur striker Son converted into an opportunity and produced a match-winning goal for the team.

Man of the Match was awarded to Hotspurs Gareth Bale who told Sky Sports, “They came at us and pushed hard in the first half. Obviously we’ve only had a couple of days with the new manager to work on a couple of things. At half-time we had a good chat, a few things we could improve slightly, and we controlled the game in the second half and deserved victory. We had a few positional issues and needed to be more patient on the ball. Obviously it was a very good team-talk at half time, and we came out in the second half to play well. Some minor teething issues, but we continue to improve, we’ve got a cup final at the weekend, a few days to work, and we go from there.”
