The transfer saga of Kylian Mbappe was always thought of as a two-way race between PSG and Real Madrid. But the Ligue 1 star has revealed he was also interested in joining Liverpool before signing a contract extension with PSG.
Mbappe had talks with Liverpool on two separate occasions in the span of five years, but the deal never materialised. He also added that his mother is a huge fan of the Merseyside club.
“We talked a little bit, but not too much,” Mbappe said to Daily Telegraph. “I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her (Fayza Lamari).”
Liverpool tried to sign him almost five years ago when he was in Monaco. “It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club. Of course, it was between Real Madrid and Paris St Germain in the end.”
Earlier this year, Liverpool’s boss Jurgen Klopp had also expressed his desire to sign Mbappe. But Klopp was very pragmatic from the beginning, as splashing such a hefty sum on a single player is totally against the ethos of the club.
“Of course we are interested in Kylian Mbappe, we are not blind. We like him and if you don’t like him then you have to question yourself. But, no, we are not, we cannot be part of these battles,” said Klopp.
Soon after Mbappe’s decision to stay in his home country, he had a talk with president Emmanuel Macron.
“We often spoke. When you are a national figure, you have rights and duties. I informed him of my choice. He said he was very happy and that it was great news for the country,” said Mbappe.
