Match number five between Kolkata and Mumbai, being played in Chennai, saw some unexpected turns towards the last overs. Mumbai Indians beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 10 runs. Player of the match was awarded to Rahul Chahar for taking four wickets for 27 runs in his assigned four-over quota.

Batting first, Mumbai scored 152 runs for the loss of seven wickets in their 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav scored 56 runs in just 36 deliveries, which was also his second half century in this year’s IPL in the span of two matches. While Suryakumar Yadav smashed all the big hits, Rohit Sharma kept rotating the strike from another end, and scored 43 runs off 32 deliveries.

Mumbai’s innings was soon halted by Andre Russell, whose magic spell diminished Mumbai Indians towards the end. He took a five-for in just two overs while only conceding 15 runs. Pat Cummins also grabbed a couple of wickets, while Shakib took one wicket. Before IPL 2021, no other bowler has taken a five-for against the Mumbai Indians. Now, Harshal Patel from RCB camp (which he took in match number one) and Andre Russell hold this record against the five-time champion side.

While chasing a moderate total, Nitish Rana for Kolkata Knight Riders scored a solid 57 runs off 47 deliveries, accompanying him Shubman Gill, played a good knock of 33 runs in 24 balls. At 122 for three, it seemed an easy win for KKR, but the batting order collapsed suddenly and from there on, it was a struggle for the team.

Rahul Chahar took crucial four wickets along with Trent Boult’s two wickets for 27 runs and turned the match towards Mumbai. Mumbai Indians have now won 11 out of the last 12 games against Kolkata Knight Riders.

“Disappointing performance. to say the least KKR apologies to all the fans!”, KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan tweeted after the match. MI jumped to second position on the points table after the match, while KKR dropped to fifth on the table.
