Indian Women’s cricket team has evolved over the turn of the century for the better, and it has become pretty evident by the recent string of performances and results that the team has shown in the past decade or so. BCCI and the ICC have made it very clear that they want to focus on women’s evolution and introduce new tournaments for their participation also. The 2022 Commonwealth games will also feature women’s cricket, which is a huge step up for the game and the women’s teams in general. Indian women’s team first competed in a six-match Test series against the mighty West Indies and registered their first win in that series at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium, Patna. They also lost a test in that series which meant that the series would be drawn like the other four test matches. But this was a great result when you are competing in test cricket for the very first time. This was a massive step in the women’s evolution in cricket in India and across the world. BCCI has started focusing on women’s cricket a lot these days and looking to do more if required. Their efforts are paying dividends which can be seen as a result of their performances in ICC tournaments. The women’s team first participated in the 1978 world cup and finished in the group stage, and had a similar exit in the 1982 and 1993 World Cup. After that, they have reached the semi-finals thrice and the finals once, losing out to England in 2017 in the final. In the T20 World Cup also, they have had a similar ride. They have been close to victory but get snatched of it right in the end. In the T20s, they also reached the semis three times and finished runners-up once, losing Australia in 2020. The Asia Cup is a truly different story for the Indian contingent. Since its inaugural edition, India has won six consecutive Asia cup titles and has only lost one match in these seven tournaments, which was 2018 final. It is fair to say that the Indian Women’s team has had a fair share of ups and downs over the years and has two-three senior women fighting for redemption. We are talking about the greats Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami. These two have been there for the country for a long time and are still there to nurture the youngsters with their wholesome experience and build a team that can shape the future.
