David Warner was at his absolute best against his old team Sunrisers Hyderabad as his blistering half-century powered Delhi Capitals to a comfortable win at Brabourne Stadium in Match 50 of IPL 2022. Warner scored an unbeaten 92 and forged an important partnership with Rovman Powell to propel his side to 207/3.
All eyes were on Warner, who was facing his former franchise for the first time after leaving them on a bitter note last year. The Australian spent nine seasons at the club, and also led them to their only IPL trophy in 2016. Last year, however, Warner was sacked as a captain after a series of low scores in challenging conditions, and was also dropped from the squad by the end of the season.
The franchise didn’t retain him for the IPL 2022, as they were looking to build their team around Kane Williamson. Warner was then acquired by Delhi Capitals in the mega auction.
Much of the narratives about this match were centered around Warner, who was going to be up against his old team for the first time after an unceremonious exit last year. But the 35-year-old downplayed its significance and said: “My thoughts are like every other game, just keep going through your processes till you have to do it, training and just get ready for the game.”
David Warner has spoken about how deeply hurt he was with the way Hyderabad treated him. After getting the Player Of The Series award in the T20 World Cup last year, Warner said: “When you are dropped from the team you have loved the most for years without any real fault of yours and stripped of captaincy without being given a reason, it hurts.”
Thus Warner certainly had a point to prove, and he did it in style. Moreover, he sacrificed his hundred for the team’s cause, allowing Rovman Powell to be on the strike for the final over.
Let’s take a look at some of the public reactions to Warner’s blitzkrieg against Sunrisers Hyderabad:
