Kalki thinks death is an “exciting idea”

Kalki Koechlin is making her directorial debut and we can’t wait to see what she has churned out this time.

“What’s next? She doesn’t believe in plotting trajectories and planning strategies. Right now, all she wants to do is closet herself from the world for a week and write down the story that’s dancing in her head. Theatre is her first love and people such as German dance pioneer Pina Bausch and Canadian theatre director and playwright Robert Lepage are her heroes…”

That is an excerpt from Kalki Koechlin’s last interview with MW. She’s an actor, writer, poet and activist. And come July, Kalki Koechlin is debuting as a director too. No, it’s not a film (though we hope that happens soon), but a play called The Living Room under her theatre company, Little Productions’s banner. Scheduled to open in Bangalore on July 24th, the play features well known actors like Jim Sarbh, Neil Bhoopalam, Tariq Vasudeva and Sheeba Chadha and is a satire on life and death.

“Last year, when I was unemployed for six months, I started fleshing out the story. It turned into a comedy on life and death.” She mentioned in an interview to Mumbai Mirror. In fact, the actor has found Hollywood director Woody Allen’s work riddled with the same theme. “Death is what makes us value life and be depressed at the same time…it just depends on how you look at it. I thought that was an exciting idea to explore,” Koechlin added.
