India next for Netflix?
India next for Netflix?

If rumours are to be believed, the Internet streaming giant will kick off here in 2016, offering iconic shows on mobile platforms

Reports state that American Internet TV pioneer Netflix is planning to launch its streaming service to India. News is that after the company’s expansion to Australia and New Zealand, they want to head to here as part of plans to be “nearly global by the end of 2016”. This October, they are already kicking off services in Italy, Iceland, Spain and Portugal.

Sources say the service will launch on iOS and Android platforms, and will kick off with iconic Indian TV shows like Malgudi Days, Buniyaad and Nukkad available on demand.

The concept of on-demand players in India isn’t new – with Hotstar, Spuul and Hooq already in the fray – but the lack of great Internet in India has inhibited their growth. However, the arrival of an already successful platform like Netflix may have DTH service providers scrambling to diversify their portfolio.

India, it is claimed, has the world’s largest rate of growth in the number of mobile Internet users. That – along with the gradual growth of 4G in the country – makes it a ripe time for Netflix to increase their 62 million-strong subscriber base.

Original content from Netflix includes the hit TV shows House Of Cards and Orange Is The New Black. They’ve also acquired the fourth season of the former Fox sitcom Arrested Development and two seasons of the show Lilyhammer. This August, Netflix will release The Green Legend – their first production – which will be a sequel to the 2000 hit, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It will be the first film to premiere simultaneously on Netflix, and in IMAX theatres worldwide.
