Originally, a filmed version of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical, Hamilton was set to release on October 15, 2021, but now, Disney has revealed that it is accelerating the release to July 3 this year on Disney Plus.
Disney Executive Chairman Robert Iger and creator and original star Lin-Manuel Miranda announced the news on Good Morning America and stated that the seminal hip-hop American history tale will likely brighten up the July 4 weekend for Americans.
This is not the first show to have been accelerated through by Disney. The company moved up the release of the 10-part Michael Jordan documentary The Last Dance.
Deadline reports that Disney paid $75 million for worldwide rights, beating other suitors and paying what some believe to be “the largest sum ever for a finished film in the Endeavor Content-brokered deal”. Not only did Hamilton win a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, but it also won 11 Tony Awards in 2016.
