Bustling with street food markets, decades-old eateries, and upscale diners, the city of Ahmedabad is known to take the discerning foodie by surprise.

 

Chandravilas

 

 

Tucked away from the bustle; Chandra Vilas is an iconic 123-year-old culinary landmark that has stood the test of time, owing to its impressive service and classic Gujrati fare. Drop by and sink your teeth into their bestseller from decades—Gujarathi jalebi, fafda, kadhi and dhokla.

 

History notes how back in 1901, Chandra Vilas rose to prominence after being the first of their kind to serve locals the traditional Gujarati thali in a restaurant-like setup—a concept that wasn’t as popular as it is today.

 

Tomato’s

Irrespective of where you are, if a sumptuous American and/ or Mexican meal is what attracts you; the upscale American Diner won’t disappoint. Having been in the business for 29 years and counting, Tomato’s enjoys a robust fan following in town. Agashiye translates to ‘Terrace’ in Gujrati, and continues to be one of the most popular restaurants out there. One of the highlights is the food, which is served in two different formats, likely Heritage Grand and Heritage Classic, in Silver and Kansa thalis respectively. You can also choose between lounge and terrace in terms of where you wish to sit. Known for great hospitality and serving up homestyle meals made using fresh, seasonal ingredients, Agashiye leaves you with a full tummy and heart.

 

Bhatiyar Gali

How can you possibly visit Ahmedabad and not try the street food? While great snacks are served in many pockets across the city, if there’s only one place you’d like to visit, let it be Bhatiyar Gali. This famous culinary street is known for old-style food shops that serve up street food using ‘secret’ recipes and masalas. Suggested stuff to try are Bera samosa, haleem-biryani, and tawa fish fry.

Much like Bhatiya Ghali, Manek Chowk is a bustling night food street that doubles up as a food market during the day. Drop by around 9:30 p.m. to witness the celebrated street in its full glory. Besides the kulfi, other famous offerings to try are pav bhaji, sandwich, dosa, bhelpuri, chatnipuri, and kulfi. 

 

Induben Khakrawala

This goes without saying. When in Ahmedabad, enjoy a pack (or two) of Khakra. While the lightweight crunchy snack is widely available, most pale in comparison to the ones served at Induben Khakrawala. Known to serve more than 50 varieties of delicious and crunchy khakhras, other popular dishes on the menu include sev, dhokla, Chinese snacks, and sweets.

 

A1 Maggi Bhajiya

Maggi might hit differently when you’re up there in the hills. However, there’s no denying that Maggi can be enjoyed anywhere. Especially so, if you are in Ahmedabad. True to its title, A1 Maggi Bhajiya is known for its delicious golden fritters made out of Maggi, amongst many others.

 

Oshwal’s Jalebi Fafda

 

 

When in Ahmedabad, it only makes sense to stop counting the calories and live a little.For instance, treating your sweet tooth to an indulgence at Oshwal’s Jalebi Fafda will leave you happier. Recommended must-haves include Oswal’s specialty: jalebis which are served with fafda, papaya, and coriander chutney. They’re also known for their Fafda chutney and Khaman chutney, so don’t shy away from asking for an extra portion of either.
