One of the world’s most important and starry film events, the Venice Film Festival appears to have reached gender parity when it comes to its competition lineup.
This year, eight films directed by women will compete for the Golden Lion amongst other selections. Since 1932, only four women have won the honour with Sofia Coppola being the most recent winner with Somewhere in 2010. Other past winners include Mira Nair, Margarethe von Trotta, and Agnès Varda.
This year, the festival will host films from a variety of female directors like Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), Mona Fastvold (The World to Come), Emma Dante (Le Sorelle Macaluso), Nicole Garcia (Lovers), Susanna Nicchiarelli (Miss Marx), Malgorzata Szumowska (Never Gonna Snow Again), Julia Von Heinz (And Tomorrow the Entire World), and Jasmila Zbanic (Quo Vadis, Aida?), reports Indiewire.
