Watch The Trailer: The Infamous ‘Nanavati’ Case Is Back Into Focus With Akshay Kumar’s Rustom

This highly anticipated film is about infidelity, murder and an eventual trial which was also instrumental in abolishing jury trials in India.

The first trailer of  the Akshay Kumar starrer Rustom is out.  Based on a real-life event, this highly anticipated film is about how a married commander in the Indian Navy, KM Nanavati, discovers his wife’s love affair with another man, Prem Ahuja, and subsequently shoots him. This sensational episode was followed by a court case which led to the abolishing of jury trials in India and was also instrumental in creating massive friction between two communities: the Sindhis and the Parsis.

The gruesome incident, which took place in the year 1959, possessed the power to polarise public opinion, where some people were in actual support of the culprit. Also, the incident led to the rise of Ram Jethmalani, who was the prosecutor at that time.

“Like the Raman Raghav case, the Nanavati trial appears to be part of received memory for every Bombayite, even those from today’s generation, passed on father to son or grandmother to grand-daughter”, according to our story ‘Love/Death and Scandal in Bombay’. For a detailed account of the sensational Nanavati case, read our story here.

Trivia: If you’re an ardent fan of Anurag Kashyap’s films, you should know that his song, Sylvia, in Bombay Velvet was inspired from the real-life story of Sylvia Nanavati, KM Nanavati’s wife.

Written by Vipul K Rawal, directed by debutant Tinu Suresh Desai and starring Akshay Kumar and Ileana D’Cruz, the film is slotted to hit theatres on August 12.

Until then, take a look at the trailer:
