Bollywood has a steady habit of producing remakes – be it of Hollywood films, old Hindi films or South Indian superhits. Producers think that if a story works with one set of audience, it’ll work with another set of audience too. Well, that may not always be the case. Sometimes, the magic of the original films cannot be replicated. Which is why you should take a look at a few original South Indian movies that were remade in Hindi. 

OK Kanmani (Hindi remake: OK Jaanu)

Directed by Mani Ratnam, OK Kanmani was a huge hit and depicted a live-in couple in Mumbai. Dulquer Salman and Nithya Menon played the lead roles, for which they received a lot of praise from critics as well as the general public. Another aspect working in favour of the film was music by the supremely talented AR Rahman.

Alaipayuthey (Hindi remake: Saathiya)

All love stories don’t have a happily ever after, and this film directed by Mani Ratnam deals with the problems associated with married life. Both R Madhavan and Shalini do full justice to their role throughout the movie – first as lovers hiding their affair from parents, and then as an estranged couple living separately.

Vikramarkudu (Hindi remake: Rowdy Rathore)

If you like fast paced action sequences and over-the-top dialogue deliveries, then this Telugu film is a treat to watch. Directed by SS Rajamouli, and starring Ravi Teja in the lead role, this film is about Vikram Singh Rathore beating all the bad guys but dying in the process. Later, when the goons thinks their nemesis is dead, Sathi Babu (also played by Ravi Teja) poses as Vikram Singh Rathore and takes revenge.

Ghajini (Hindi remake: Ghajini)

A classic revenge story, this film is about a man who has short-term memory loss. To compensate, he uses tattoos and photographs that helps him refresh his memory and allows him to avenge the death of his beloved Kalpana. The film directed by A.R. Murugadoss sees Suriya and Asin in lead roles.

Minnale (Hindi remake: RHTDM)

How far can you go for the one you love? Probably very far, but you’ll still be behind Rajesh Shivkumar (played by R Madhavan) who poses as Rajiv Samuel and enjoys a few days with Reena (played by Reema Sen), the object of his desire. These few days are enough for them to fall in love, but complications arise when the real Rajiv Samuel is back and Reena finds the truth about Rajesh. This film directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon is certainly one that never gets old.
