The 2021 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on September 12 at its usual venue, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Lorde, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, Camila Cabello, and Machine Gun Kelly were confirmed to take the stage during the three-hour-long event. However, the latest update is that Lorde won’t be performing during the VMAs 2021.

A tweet posted on the official VMAs account read, “Due to a change in production elements, Lorde can no longer perform at this year’s show. We love Lorde and cannot wait for her to perform on the VMA stage in the future!” While she might not be appearing on the stage, her video for the title track of her new album, Solar Power, is nominated for Best Cinematography at VMAs 2021.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Lorde’s name has been dragged into a VMA controversy. The last time when she performed on the stage in 2017, she did not sing but only did an interpretive dance onstage of her song Homemade Dynamite. Fans were bewildered by the same, after which Lorde had to post an explanation on Twitter.

In a now-deleted tweet, she wrote, “You can’t tell in these pictures but I have the flu so bad I needed an IV #showgoeson #cutelilproppedupcorpse.” She later opened up more on the topic, and said, “People got, like, so angry about me performing at the VMAs. Instead of singing, I just danced. I just danced! And I danced with full fucking joy.” She then added and said she realises why people are angry. “I’m like, ‘Oh. It’s because it’s so private seeing someone experience such joy publicly,'” she said.
