After a long, long hiatus, Genelia D’Souza will be making her comeback to the big screen in a Marathi movie. You heard that right. The Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na actress will soon be seen alongside her husband Riteish Deshmukh in Ved. Deshmukh is also set to helm the movie as a first-time director. The Marathi feature film is set to release on December 30.
Both the actors – Deshmukh and D’Souza took to Instagram to announce the project while sharing the first look at the movie. Sharing the poster, D’Souza wrote – “I was born in Maharashtra. After I started acting, I did films in different languages like Hindi-Tamil-Telugu. I got immense love from the audience there. I am making my Marathi film debut with Riteish’s first directorial venture. Working in Marathi, I feel like I have come full circle.”
Two weeks before the announcement, Deshmukh announced his intentions of getting behind the camera, saying to PTI – “This (direction) is something I was attracted to for many years but didn’t dare to do it because I was acting. In the last three-four years, I was trying to figure out.”
Further commenting on the disparity between regional cinema, particularly Marathi Cinema and Bollywood, Deshmukh further said – “It is tough for Marathi cinema to survive with Hindi cinema in the same state when the first preference is to watch Hindi over Marathi cinema. When Marathi movies become a second choice, their theatre share invariably goes down.”
Apart from acting, Deshmukh has produced several highly-rated Marathi movies, including Balak Palak, Lai Bhaari, Faster Fene, and more. He also made his acting debut in Marathi cinema with 2014’s Lai Bhaari, which was helmed by the late Nishikant Kamat.
Coming to D’Souza, the 35-year-old actress will also be seen in Mister Mummy, which is being produced by Bhushan Kumar and also stars Deshmukh in one of the roles. D’souza is also scheduled to star in a Telugu-Kannada film, Production No.15.
